Spring cleaning is good for the home, but cold and flu season calls for more drastic measures. Have you ever thought of the ways you set yourself up for contracting diseases that could easily be avoided with simple hygiene?
It’s a fact; we are surrounded by germs no matter where we go: the supermarket, public transportation, work, and the library. Our body can handle most of what we come in contact with, but with cold and flu season around the corner, we need to be more proactive in taking steps to protect ourselves and our family. This is where good hygiene comes into place.
Many are used to thinking of our cars as almost a home away from home, and it’s common to see people eating or changing a child’s diaper in a car. Sometimes you don’t really have much of a choice. But considering the fact that you will probably be loading groceries in the same car on a regular basis, wouldn’t it make sense to keep it clean? That’s where the difference resides. In a recent study, scientists from the University of Aston found that an average car contained 283 types of bacteria per square centimeter. The highest concentrations where found not surprisingly on the gear stick. Simply put, you may be driving your children to school, your toddler to day-care, and yourself to work, in a haven of bacteria. That’s how the vicious cycle begins…
Our workspace is also more often then not the culprit of infectious diseases. Phones, mouses, and keyboards should be wiped down on a regular basis, and if you eat at your desk, you should clean it right after you eat. Also, it is not a good idea to store food at your desk. If you don’t have a kitchen at work, then keep food in an appropriate and sealed container such as a lunch box.
If possible, certain habits should be modified. Eating in your car, for example, increases the chances of bacteria reproducing. It makes sense then that eating in bed or at your desk isn’t a good idea, either.
Finally, following simple and precautionary measures such as these gives us an advantage when facing the inevitable contagious viruses and germs that commonly circulate throughout the season and can put a halt on your life and the lives of your family- and staying well is something we can all benefit from!
