How to Identify Causes of Sore Throats & Get Relief

When symptoms of a sore throat start to come on it could be the result of environmental factors or it could be something serious. When the back of your throat starts feeling raw, more than likely you are about to experience a sore throat. Sore throats can be cause by a number of things including excessive talking, drinking or smoking.

Rest is the best medicine for soreness in your throat, that is caused by too much drinking or smoking. Throat lozenges, soft foods, and gargling with warm salt water will also help ease the pain and speed up the recovery time.

Respiratory Illnesses
If you have a respiratory illness such as the flu, tonsillitis, laryngitis, or a cold, then a sore throat is likely to accompany it. Once the illness has passed, the soreness in your throat is will likely pass as well. Just like with a regular sore throat, gargling with warm liquids can be soothing. Every couple of hours try to suck on a piece of hard candy such as a peppermint, or a medicated lozenge. Be careful not to overdo the candy or drop because it could mask a serious symptom. A vaporizer or humidifier is sometimes used to comfort a respiratory illness.

Postnasal Drip
Just like with respiratory illnesses, a sore throat from a postnasal drip will clear up once the cause has been passed.

Other Symptoms to Check For
Look at your tonsils. If they are inflamed or swollen, you probably have tonsillitis. If you have a high fever or white spots on your tonsils, then you should seek medical assistance for your tonsils. Sore throats can sometimes be symptoms of other serious illnesses such as mononucleosis, strep throat, or a viral infection. Check for high fever, swollen glands, fever, and fatigue. If you have these symptoms could all be signs that you do indeed have a more serious problem. Consult a doctor, as they will be able to prescribe an antibiotic that will help in most cases.
